Pre-modern Chinese music can be divided into two categories according to traditional scholarly classifications, namely, Jingxue (経学) and arts (藝術). Confucian scholars studied musical temperament as Jingxue, which was the study of the Four Books and Five Classics of Confucianism (四書五経). In relation to the study of musical temperament, some of them discussed “technology”, such as astronomy and metrology. The “arts” included playing traditional musical instruments, such as the guqin (古琴), and musical scores, as in Qinqishuhua (琴棋書画), along with Go, calligraphy, and painting. In this lecture, the concept of “beauty” in traditional Chinese culture through the lens of Chinese music, which was a science, technology, and art will be examined.

NOTE: - This lecture was conducted only in Japanese.
