Albert Einstein predicted the wave phenomena we today call "gravitational waves" 100 years ago. The first observation of gravitational waves was made on 14 September 2015 and was announced by the LIGO and Virgo collaborations on 11 February 2016. This attainment opened a new era of astronomy.

In this lecture, Prof. Miyoki explains the properties of gravitational waves and the methods of their observation.
