As the promotion of Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) has become a major issue, "diversity" and "safety" are increasingly being framed in opposition to each other, often carrying a certain tension. The D&I division of the Komaba Organization for Educational Excellence, which traces its roots to the previously unprecedented Safer Space initiatives at a Japanese university, has also faced this tension in various circumstances through its educational and research activities. While being grounded in the field of liberal arts education, we intend to confront this relationship of tension and reexamine the possibility of coexistence of diversity and safety.
